Communicating Online

It is always advised to utilize the dating website’s chatting and messaging platforms, which are safe and secure. Do not move to personal email or telephone numbers until you get to know more about the other person. Always think safety. Be careful that you don’t give out too much personal information too soon. Once your full name is known, anyone can easily find out the rest on the internet.

One red flag of a scammer is that you are asked almost immediately for your personal email or cellphone number. Several reasons are usually given, such as so you can get acquainted faster or the other person is busy and unable to come to the dating website very often. Do not fall for it! Once you give out your private email address or cellphone number, the other person’s profile almost always disappears quickly. This means they are not a paid subscriber, and they are phishing. Beware of them.

For those who are unfamiliar with the different means of communication online, I have printed the following definitions from the Wikipedia Online Dictionary.

Text messaging is the act of composing and sending electronic messages between two or more users of mobile devices, desktops, laptops, or other type of compatible computers. Text messages may be sent over a cellular network. . . or via an Internet Service (SMS). . . but has grown to include. . . digital images, videos, and sound content, as well as ideograms known as emojis or small images. Text messaging is a quick and easy way to communicate with friends and colleagues when the two people are not required to be present at the same time. It was first used in 1992.

An E-mail is a text document which is sent to your Internet Service Provider server when you press the ‘send’ button. There it sits for a little while, from a few microseconds to an hour or so, waiting for the mail server to process outgoing email. This document is transmitted as a single file, including attachments, to another server, the recipient’s Internet Service Provider’s incoming mail server. . . The message then resides on the incoming server until it is downloaded by the recipient.

Instant text messaging is a series of data packets, sent as the “send” key is activated, then are routed by whichever way is available, to another computer. However, many ISP text servers are operated in a batch processing fashion, so the text messages may sit in the outgoing server for a second or two.”

Online Chat is a conversation between two or more people at computer keyboards. . . and are sent without delay, to each computer that is logged into the chat session.

Which method is fastest? “Email is fast, text messaging is faster, and online chat is the fastest.”

Communication begins on a dating website when one person sends a message of interest to another. The recipient receives an alert text message on his or her own cellphone or computer and then must log in to his or her account online in order to read the message and respond accordingly.
